Where flowers go in Bursa

Bursa spreads along the foot of Uludağ, and most orders from abroad stay within its three central districts. Osmangazi is the historic heart: the old covered bazaars and hans, the great mosques, and narrow streets where the same families have lived for generations. Nilüfer, to the west, is newer, with wide boulevards, apartment complexes with a guard at the gate, and the university campus at Görükle, which makes it a regular address for birthday flowers to students. Yıldırım, to the east, is dense and residential, with the old Ottoman village of Cumalıkızık on its mountain edge.

Old neighbourhoods, new complexes

Bursa is a city of arrivals. Over the last century, families from the Balkans, above all from Bulgaria and the former Yugoslavia, settled here alongside newcomers from every corner of Anatolia, and many of those families now have relatives living abroad. That history shows in the addresses. In the older quarters of Osmangazi and Yıldırım a house is often better known by the family's name than by its door number, so add a landmark such as the neighbourhood mosque, a bakery or a pharmacy. In Nilüfer's gated complexes it is the opposite: security phones the flat before letting the courier in, so the complex name, block, flat number and the recipient's mobile number are what count.

Sea, lake and mountain

Not every Bursa address is in the city. Mudanya, on the Sea of Marmara, fills with summer residents, and the stone village of Tirilye belongs to it. Gemlik is a port town among olive groves; İnegöl, south-east of the city, is a large district known for its furniture workshops; İznik sits on its lake further east. Give the mahalle name for all of these, and allow for next-day delivery to outlying villages. In winter, snow on the Uludağ road can push back deliveries to the mountain hotels; there, as in any hotel, flowers go to reception, so write the guest's full name and room number.

Many people in Bursa also work in the industrial zones around the city. A bouquet sent to a factory is handed in at the security gate, so include the recipient's full name, department and phone number.
