Where flowers go in Kayseri

Most orders to Kayseri end up in the city's two central districts, Melikgazi and Kocasinan. Between them they cover the old quarters around the citadel and the covered bazaar as well as the newer apartment blocks along the tram line, which is where many parents of people living abroad still live. Talas, climbing the slope towards Ali Mountain, is the other address we see often: it is popular with families and has a large student population, so student birthdays and early-summer graduations account for a fair share of bouquets there.

Further out, Develi and Yahyalı in the south and Pınarbaşı in the east are the family hometowns of many people who moved to Istanbul, Ankara or Europe. A bouquet sent there is usually for a mother, father or grandparent who never left.

Practical delivery notes for Kayseri

• Gated complexes. Many newer housing estates (called *site*) in Talas and Melikgazi have a security post at the gate. Give the block name, flat number and the recipient's mobile number so the guard can call up.
• Village addresses. In the villages of Develi, Tomarza, Sarız or Pınarbaşı, street names and house numbers are not always used. Add the village and neighbourhood name plus a landmark such as the mosque, the school or the headman's office. Remote villages may receive their delivery the next day, and if the address can't be reached we get in touch with you.
• Winter. Kayseri has long, snowy winters. If you know when the recipient will be home, put it in the order note.
• Erciyes ski hotels. During the ski season, deliveries to hotels on Mount Erciyes go to reception. Include the guest's full name, room number if known, and arrival date.
• Hospitals. Write the patient's name, ward and room. Intensive care units generally don't accept flowers, so the bouquet is left at the information desk or with a family member.

Customs worth knowing: bayram, condolences and Mother's Day

Kayseri has a reputation as a city of merchants, of furniture makers and of close-knit, fairly traditional families. Visiting relatives during the two religious holidays (bayram) really matters here; when you can't make the trip, flowers arriving at the family home on the eve of bayram say what a phone call can't. Turkish Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday of May, and as we don't deliver on Sundays, order for the Saturday before.
