Where flowers go in Adana

Adana is the big city of the Çukurova plain, split in two by the Seyhan river. On the west bank, Seyhan is the old centre around the Roman stone bridge, Taşköprü, with long-established neighbourhoods and busy shopping streets. Çukurova, to the north, is where much of the city's newer housing has gone up: tower blocks and gated complexes with security at the entrance. Across the river lies the large residential district of Yüreğir, and further north-east Sarıçam, home to the main university campus and its hospital, so student birthdays and hospital visits both bring flowers there.

Heat, timing and the summer move

Adana's summers are long and very hot, and that matters for flowers. Make sure someone will be at home: a bouquet handed over in person stays fresh, one left waiting in a stairwell in August does not. In the gated complexes of Çukurova, security usually phones the flat before letting the courier in, so the recipient's mobile number, the complex name, block and flat number are essential. Many Adana families also leave the plain in the hottest months, for highland houses in the Taurus around Pozantı or for the coast at Karataş and Yumurtalık. If you are ordering in July or August, check where your recipient is spending that week. Highland villages may need next-day delivery, and a landmark such as the village mosque helps the florist.

Orange blossom and the districts beyond the city

Spring is Adana's flower season: the orange and lemon groves of the plain come into bloom, and in recent years the city has celebrated with an orange blossom carnival. Outside the centre, Kozan, below its hilltop castle and surrounded by citrus groves, and Ceyhan, the farming and industrial town to the east, are two of the province's larger districts. Village addresses there are often given by mahalle and family name rather than street and number; add a phone number and a landmark. Engagements, weddings, circumcision feasts and new babies are celebrated in Adana with a full house and plenty of noise.
