The three city districts and beyond

Şanlıurfa, simply Urfa to almost everyone who grew up there, is one of Türkiye's metropolitan provinces, and its city is divided into three districts: Haliliye, Eyyübiye and Karaköprü. The historic city, with its bazaars, old caravanserais and the neighbourhoods around Balıklıgöl, the pool of sacred fish, lies to the south, while Karaköprü to the north is where most of the newer apartment blocks and gated sites have gone up. Hospitals, Harran University and most offices are spread across these three districts, so they receive most birthday, new-baby and get-well orders. Beyond the city, Siverek and Viranşehir are large towns in their own right, Birecik and Halfeti sit on the Euphrates, Harran is known for its beehive-domed houses on the irrigated plain, and Suruç, Akçakale and Ceylanpınar lie along the Syrian border.

Summer heat and getting the address right

Urfa summers are fierce, and a bouquet should never be left on a doorstep in the afternoon sun. Make sure someone will be at home on the day and give a phone number that will actually be answered. In Karaköprü's gated sites, add the site name, block and flat number for the security booth. In the old neighbourhoods, streets are narrow and many houses open onto a courtyard; a landmark such as the nearest mosque or a well-known shop helps the florist find the door. In villages on the Harran plain or around Siverek, the mosque, the muhtar's house or the school matters far more than a street name. Celebrations, visits and condolences

Urfa is a city of large families, long evenings and sıra gecesi gatherings. When there's a wedding, an engagement, a new baby or a circumcision celebration, flowers sent from abroad are seen by the whole family. Hospital visits are a family affair too, so rather than a crowded ward, a get well soon bouquet sent home after discharge is often the more thoughtful choice. Condolence customs are strong and traditional: the family receives visitors for days, and in more conservative households flowers at a house of mourning are less usual than a visit or a phone call. Halfeti's black rose and visiting friends

Halfeti is famous for the black rose, karagül, that grows in the area.
