A province built around the gulf

Kocaeli wraps around the Gulf of İzmit and is one of Türkiye's most industrial provinces, and that shapes where flowers go. İzmit is the provincial centre, with its seafront park, its hospitals and the main university campus on the hill above the city; it is also the home of pişmaniye, the candy-floss sweet that visitors take home. At the western end, Gebze, Darıca and Çayırova merge into Istanbul's commuter belt, with large new housing estates, industrial zones and a technical university. Along the southern shore, Gölcük, Karamürsel and Başiskele are quieter towns facing the water, while Körfez, Derince and Dilovası are dominated by ports and heavy industry.

Two districts are different again. Kartepe rises from the lake shore to a ski resort, with bungalows and restaurants along the stream in Maşukiye. Kandıra runs north to the Black Sea, with villages and summer beaches such as Kerpe and Kefken.

Workplaces, shifts and home deliveries

Many people in Kocaeli work shifts in factories and industrial zones. Flowers can be delivered to a workplace, but large plants usually have a security gate where personal deliveries are left, and the recipient may not be able to leave the line to collect them. For a birthday surprise, a home delivery, or an office building with a staffed reception, is usually the better choice. The new estates in Gebze, Darıca, Başiskele and Kartepe are mostly gated, with a security booth at the entrance. Include the estate name, block and flat number; security normally calls the flat before letting the florist in.

Traffic and timing

Kocaeli is crossed by the D-100 highway and the Anatolian motorway, and between Gebze and İzmit traffic at rush hour can be heavy. In central İzmit, Gebze, Darıca, Gölcük and Kartepe, orders placed before 14:00 Türkiye time can usually be delivered the same day, but plan for a delivery window rather than an exact time. Villages in Kandıra and the higher parts of Kartepe may receive flowers on the next delivery day, and snow on the Kartepe road can add time in winter.

Occasions and what to send

Young families in the new estates mean plenty of births, and new baby flowers are a common order for maternity wards and homes; hospitals normally accept them at reception with the mother's name and room. For a partner or a milestone, roses delivered to a Kartepe bungalow or a lakeside restaurant make a memorable surprise; give the business name and the guest's phone number.
