Where flowers go in Sakarya

Adapazarı is Sakarya's old commercial centre, with its market streets and the city's main hospitals. Since the 1999 earthquake the city has grown steadily west into Serdivan, now a district of new housing estates, shopping centres and the university campus, and into Erenler to the east. Students, young families and people who commute to the factories around Arifiye and Hendek make up much of the city's population, so birthdays, new babies and graduations are everyday reasons to send flowers here.

To the south lies Sapanca, a lakeside town of hotels, bungalows and weekend houses that is popular with visitors from Istanbul and abroad. To the north, Karasu and Kocaali sit on the Black Sea, with long beaches and estates of summer houses. Inland, Akyazı, Hendek and Geyve are hazelnut and farming country, and Taraklı is known for its restored Ottoman wooden houses.

Sapanca: bungalows and lake hotels

Sapanca is where many anniversary and birthday surprises go, and it needs a little care. Lakeside hotels receive flowers at reception: write the guest's full name as on the booking and the stay dates. Bungalow and villa rentals are different. Many sit on private plots on the slopes above the lake, where street names are vague and the entrance is a gate rather than a door. Give the name of the bungalow business, the bungalow number and a phone number for the guest, so the florist can call when they reach the gate.

Estates in Serdivan, summer houses in Karasu

Most recipients in Serdivan and Adapazarı live in gated estates (site) with a security booth. Write the estate name, block and flat number; security may call the flat or ask the recipient to come down, so a phone number speeds things up. Student dormitories normally receive flowers at the front desk.

Karasu and Kocaali are lively in summer and very quiet in winter. If you are sending to a summer house, check that the recipient is actually there and include the estate name and house number. Outside July and August, a delivery to their home address in the city is usually the safer choice.

Family occasions

Many Sakarya families trace their roots to the Balkans, the Caucasus and Georgia, and engagements and weddings are big, family-wide events. A congratulations bouquet sent to the bride's or groom's family home before the celebration is a warm gesture from abroad, and an arrangement suits a home full of guests better than loose stems. For village addresses in Geyve, Pamukova or Taraklı, add the neighbourhood name and a landmark such as the mosque or the school.
